Commuting on a Vespa in Davao

Why a Vespa makes city life easier, and the habits that keep your daily ride safe, cool and stress-free.

For getting around Davao City, few things beat a Vespa. It slips through traffic, parks almost anywhere, and turns a daily commute into the best part of the day. Riding every day in a busy city also calls for good habits. Here is how our members make city riding safe, cool and stress-free.

Why a Vespa Works in the City

  • Easy to handle in stop-and-go traffic, with a step-through frame that makes getting on and off simple in work clothes.
  • Easy to park, taking a fraction of the space of a car.
  • Practical storage under the seat for a rain jacket, a lock and small daily things.
  • The steel body that makes a Vespa feel solid and planted on city streets.

Get Your Papers and Helmet Right

  • Carry your driver's licence (one that covers motorcycles) and your scooter's current registration.
  • Wear a certified helmet. The Motorcycle Helmet Act (Republic Act 10054) requires riders to wear standard protective helmets that carry the Philippine Standard (PS) mark or the Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) sticker.
  • Follow local rules. Davao City is known for strictly enforcing its traffic rules, including speed limits, so keep to the posted limits and expect them to be checked.

Everyday Traffic Habits

  • Assume you are not seen. Ride with your headlight on and stay out of drivers' blind spots.
  • Watch public transport. Jeepneys, buses and tricycles stop often and suddenly to pick up passengers.
  • Leave space in front of you, and avoid squeezing between moving vehicles.
  • Signal early and check your mirrors before every turn or lane change.
  • Leave a few minutes early. Rushing is the root of most risky decisions.

Beating the Heat

  • Choose ventilated gear: a mesh riding jacket and breathable gloves protect you without overheating.
  • Drink water before longer rides, and keep a small bottle under the seat.
  • Park in the shade when you can; seats and dark panels get very hot in the midday sun.

Parking and Security

  • Use designated motorcycle parking where it exists, and never block sidewalks or driveways.
  • Lock the steering every time, and add a disc lock or chain for longer stops.
  • Don't leave valuables under the seat; it gets hot, and it is the first place a thief looks.

What to Keep Under the Seat

  • A light rain jacket
  • A disc lock or chain
  • A small first aid kit and a phone charging cable
  • Copies of your documents in a waterproof pouch
